Shanghai Beer-Golf.com Open 2003, a showcase for modern golf
Controversy surrounds final results
SHANGHAI — JULY 31, 2003 — While much of the world was focused on the British Open, another premium golfing event, the Shanghai Beer-Golf.com 2003 Open Championship, was held at the Shanghai Links Golf Course on July 20th. Mr. Gerry Hamilton, Director of Beer-Golf.com China, supported by Mr. Brad Nuke Them played host to a highly competitive and what transpired to be a unique golfing event.
The unique and now patented Four Ball Individual Score Rotational Scoring System, developed by Brad Nuke Them, was adopted for this event. This means that each player in each flight is only important for one hole out of every four. This format appeals greatly to Beer-Golf.com members as it means that after fifteen minutes work screwing up a hole, a player can then relax for the following 45 minutes and have a brew and a chat with his mates, which is always a good thing. Aside from the social aspect of this system is also very popular as it means that the blame is shared equally for a bad round of golf and nobody goes home feeling guilty.

The competition was also further spiced up by Joey Le Bomb inviting his good mate Eddie Jordan along for the day. This proved once more that Joey is an International High Flyer, and is without doubt, the last of the international playboys. His Ordinary Membership Status of Beer-Golf.com is currently being reviewed. “Joey provides an air of credibility to Beer-Golf.com - He is just like one of the boys but better, today for example, he brings along Eddie Jordan to play golf, I could not do that, the best celebrity we have ever had on Beer-Golf.com was one of Jamesy’s Girlfriends in Thailand and it was later disqualified for playing off the ladies tees when an gender issue was identified later in the showers, but, I digress”, Mr Gerry Hamilton, China Director was quoted as saying.
The teams and responsibilities within those teams were as follows:
Team 1: Beer-Golf.com Deviants
· Gerry Hamilton (Captain)
· Brad Nuke Them (Director)
· Ian Watkins (Good Golfer)
· Sam Mulligan (Commentary)
Team 2: Hairy Crab Deviants
· Joey Le Bomb (Captain & Sponsor or team three)
· Nick Ryan (Director)
· Eddie Jordan (Logistics)
· Kevin O’Connell (Fashion)
Team 3: Hairy Crab Nancy Boys
· Seamus (Captain and Legal Consultant)
· Clinton (Director)
· Mark Jarrard (Planning and Arbitration)
· Wu Man (Cultural attaché)
Gerry’s team was very competitive in the early stages while the correct balance between beer and other essential liquids were in place. The strategy adopted by this team was simple. Brad, Gerry and Slim would drink enough Beer for four, leaving the way open for the only talented and capable golfer in the team Mr. Ian Watkins to play the good golf. Late in the day, a few flaws were identified in this approach as it was observed that the team was only delivering 25% of the time. The loop of death was an effective car crash for the Beer-Golf.com Team. However, Mr. Watkins carried the three stooges around the course to second place overall as they recorded a score of +8. Which is actually the best round of golf that Gerry, Brad and Slim have every played. Once more the scoring system proved its merits.
Le Bomb’s team came out of the blocks very quickly, but by the first green cracks were beginning to appear in their approach. They adopted the scatter approach off the tees, and most conversations in this group were conducted on the tees, the greens and via SMS in between those two locations. Eddie Jordan was 2 under at the turn with a 70, and Le Bomb decided to rally his troops by buying 50% of the Club House beer stock after nine holes. Nick Ryan tried to get the team going on the back nine but all to no avail, Joey’s team fell victim to the loop of death and hobbled home with a score of +16.
A little late in the day it was observed that Seamus’s team contained all the good golfers, various comments about legal professionals and Australians were made to explain this phenomena, but it was too late to stop the hammer coming down and the Nancy Boys came in as winners with a +2. To the winners went 800RMB, to the runners up 400RMB and to the last placed team, the bill for all the beer and food.
However, after the Nancy Boy captain was observed drinking shandy tensions rose in the clubhouse. This led to the rapid departure of the Nancy Boys team. After their departure, Le Bomb lodged an official protest against the winning team on the grounds that none of the Nancy Boys drank any beer on the golf course. This is of course, contrary to the Beer-Golf.com constitution, and leads to immediate disqualification. After much debate on this issue, Mr. Mark Jarrard stepped in and pointed out that while he was happy to be on the winning team, that he was very embarrassed to be associated with golfers that flaunt tournament protocol and procedure so blatantly. He also pointed out that he had drunk the minimum amount of beers, (eight) on the course, for the Nancy Boys. The committee reviewed the protest and the decision was made that the results should stand and Mr. Jarrard should receive a commendation and the Beer-Golf.com Fair Play Award for July.
After the prize giving all competitors returned to the Long Bar and met with the Captain of the Senior Beer-Golf.com China Tour, Mr. God dam McCann. Fun was had by all, especially Mr. Gerry Hamilton who had a smashing time.
